Preserving a Sacred Heritage

The Department of the Archives of the Diocese of Baton Rouge houses approximately 550 volumes of records of early baptisms, confirmations, first communions, marriages, funerals and interments. To preserve this sacred heritage for future generations, a long-term program has been initiated to repair, de-acidify, strengthen and protect each volume. To date preservation of approximately one-half of the Department's collection of volumes has been completed.

What is more, since the devastation caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and their aftermath in the fall of 2005, the Department of the Archives of the Diocese of Baton Rouge continues to offer assistance to the Department of the Archives of the Archdiocese of New Orleans in the recovery and preservation of many of their historic records.

Before and after de-acidification and encapsulation

Memorial donations for the restoration of individual books or groups of books have been accepted to assist with the preservation projects of the Baton Rouge archives. When requested, a memorial page, composed by the donor and approved by the archivist, is bound into the restored volumes.
